Paratransit Service Eligibility

Eligibility for Mountain Line curb-to-curb Paratransit service is controlled by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Eligibility is available to disabled individuals who:

  1. Are unable to get to and from a bus stop.
  2. Are unable to board and de-board Mountain Line ramp and lift equipped buses.
  3. Are unable to navigate the Mountain Line system. (Know their destination, pay fares, ask and answer questions).
  4. Because of the interaction of their disability with an environmental barrier, (such as distance, weather, terrain or architectural barriers,) are prevented from traveling to or from a bus stop or destination.

Eligibility for paratransit service may be unconditional, conditional, seasonal or temporary.

Mountain Line requires a completed application and a Professional Verification describing how the applicant’s disability prevents them from using Mountain Line’s fully accessible fleet of fixed route buses. Both the completed application and Professional Verification must be received by Mountain Line for consideration of eligibility.

Mountain Line is required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to make an eligibility determination within twenty-one (21) days of receipt of a completed application and a Professional Verification. If a determination is not made within the 21 days, Mountain Line is required to provide temporary rides until an eligibility determination is made.

Clients providing documentation of ADA Paratransit eligibility from other transit agencies will be eligible for trips for twenty-one (21) days from the date of the first scheduled trip. These clients will then be required to complete the Mountain Line ADA application process.

In some cases Mountain Line may require a follow up phone conversation, an informational meeting, or functional assessment by an outside source, to obtain additional eligibility information.

An appeal of the Mountain Line eligibility determination may be made to the Mountain Line Paratransit Eligibility Committee within sixty (60) days of the applicant receiving eligibility notification. A simple note requesting an appeal along with any new or additional eligibility information should be mailed to the Mountain Line Paratransit Eligibility Committee at 1221 Shakespeare, Missoula, MT 59802. Mountain Line utilizes a two (2) step appeal policy. Upon receipt of your request for an appeal, information describing the process will be mailed to you.
